About the course

This is a speaking course where students will study works of prose, poetry, and fiction in American literature in relation to their historical and cultural contexts. Texts will be selected from among a diverse group of authors for what they reflect and reveal about the evolving American experience and character (mainly the 20-21st century works). The course is designed to take 24 hours; it includes video materials, short stories (chapter readings), debates, quizzes, role play, teamwork, teacher and student presentations, etc. The language of instruction is English.

The course includes a large amount of discussion, analysis, and reading (both in class and out).

Learning objectives

At the end of the course, participants will have a clear idea of literary devices and elements of literature, they will be able to properly analyze literary texts within their historical and cultural contexts. It will be useful for students who are willing to develop their speaking, analyzing, and critical thinking skills as well as learn useful vocabulary and presentation skills. 

Besides, the benefits outlined above the students will gain the following:

  • A clear understanding of literature, literary devices, critical thinking, literary elements, etc,
  • Knowledge of the history of the US at some of the stages of its development,
  • Ability to analyze a literary text,
  • Speaking skills,
  • Knowledge of the theoretical basis of literary analysis,
  • Knowledge of how to effectively analyze, summarise, and present a literary work,
  • An understanding of dialogue, theme, and historical context in literary texts.

The course benefits young adults and adult learners due to the diversity of topics discussed, reading materials, and a chance to get acquainted with the history and culture of the US. This course can be supplementary for students studying literature at university, who want to enhance their knowledge of American literature and culture.
