The course will provide trainees with a comprehensive and deep understanding of the principles, processes, best practices and contemporary issues in the field.  The course offers a mix of strategic, organizational, managerial, analytical knowledge and skills, and tailored one-on-one coaching to prepare participants as human resource managers, specialists, or trainers in their organizations and beyond.  Topics covered include organizational and HRM choices on who to hire, how to retain and reward them, how to develop them, and how to maximize their potential.  These are key decisions that you will learn to make and improve organizational productivity and success.  You and other team members are important assets for your organization and your performance impacts others. That is why decisions by managers in selection, training, performance management, and compensation are instrumental to the success of the unit and organization. 

Learning Objectives:  The objectives of this course are to enable students to:

  • Understand human resource management from a systemic, strategic perspective.
  • Describe the field of “human resource management” and understand its functional relevance to managers and employees in work organizations.
  • Conduct analyses of human capital and accordingly develop job designs and descriptions, vacancy announcements, position descriptions.
  • Understand how to recruit the best, appraise performance, and create challenging individual development.
  • Recognize basic human resource management tools, such as performance indicators, appraisals and development plans, as well as retention and succession strategies.
  • Understand the big picture and develop the ability to communicate and articulate your thoughts and experience effectively.
  • Know where and when to use technology in HRM.

About the trainer: Dr. Arpie G. Balian is an educator and researcher specializing in public policy, administration and development. She holds an undergraduate degree in business administration from the American University of Beirut, a Master of Public Administration from the American University, Washington, D.C., and a dual-track doctorate in public sector leadership and performance measurement and evaluation from the University of Southern California. She has served the American University of Armenia as Professor in Political Science and International Affairs and earlier as Director of AUA Extension. Dr. Balian has held various leadership positions in the public sector, including Children of Armenia Fund; USAID Armenia Mission; US Department of Commerce; McMaster University; and others. She has conducted workshops and seminars in over a dozen countries and has trained leaders in human resource management and other fields. She has authored or co-authored over two hundred white papers and strategic briefs for the US government, as well as research articles published in peer-reviewed journals; and has presented at or chaired/co-chaired multiple international conferences and conventions worldwide.

Enrollment: To enroll in AUA Open Education courses, please go through the following steps (see below for the Armenian version):

  • Visit im.aua.am.
  • Create an account by clicking New User Registration.
  • If you are not a new user and already have an AUA account (having previously taken the AUA e-Math Test or applied to AUA), you should log into the account that you had created at that time.
  • If you just registered as a new user, you will get an email asking to activate your account.
  • Now, for registering to take a course, go to the Open Education tab, choose Adults (16+), then New Application, and apply for the course(s) you choose.
  • After you register online, your application will be reviewed and you will receive an email acknowledging your application.
  • Closer to the course start date, you will receive another email confirming your enrollment, requesting that you make payment before the course start date. The fee can be paid online via credit card or through the EasyPay terminal (located at the entrance to AUA). Alternatively, you may pay the fee via bank transfer to the American University of Armenia Fund, account 1570001024240100, Ameria Bank CJSC, indicating your full name (as in the registration) and the course you are paying for.
  • The completed application together with the record of payment completes your enrollment.
